Virtual Workshop: Co-Regulation in Early Childhood

Self-regulation, the ability to manage thoughts and feelings to accomplish goals or directive actions, has become recognized as foundational in promoting well-being across the lifespan, including educational achievement and physical, emotional, social, and economic health.

Co-Regulation Workshop Overview

Self-regulation leads to the behaviors necessary for success in school, relationships, and the workplace; however, it’s not internal to a child and begins to develop through interaction with parents, teachers, and caregivers. This supportive process is called co-regulation and it may be the most important thing we do as grown-ups in our children’s lives.

Watch the workshop below to learn more about:

  • Relationships and how they are foundational to successful executive functioning
  • Brain-body connection: how neuroscience is directly linked to the body and the behaviors that come from it
  • Looking at behavior differently: how to reframe behavior that may have been previously seen as intentional, controlled, or manipulative
  • Co-regulation vs self-regulation: how they’re different and why we need one before the other
  • Structuring the environment to help support self and co-regulation
  • Knowing your “hot buttons” and triggers as a parent/guardian
  • Self-care strategies to help parents/guardians regulate themselves first

This virtual workshop is led by Bennett Day School’s Early Childhood Director, Meg Fitzgerald, and Bambini Teacher, Kasey Dahlberg.
