Senior Spotlight: Melanie

Why did you choose/decide to go to Bennett Day School?

I chose Bennett because I wanted to challenge myself by trying a new way of learning. Through project-based learning, I’m able to explore real-world topics in depth and learn by doing instead of just memorizing facts. Bennett has pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow both academically and personally.

What are your plans after you graduate?

Next fall, I will be studying linguistics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I hope to become a speech pathologist, which stems from my passion for working with children who struggle with learning disabilities in underserved communities.

What’s your favorite project-based learning (PBL) memory?

My favorite PBL project was the accessibility PBL, where my group and I created a non-profit website for children struggling with language barriers and reading disabilities. This website, designed in both English and Spanish, consisted of worksheets, educational games, personal stories, and statistics. This project pushed me to learn more about different learning disabilities and how I can be a help in the future!

What advice would you give rising seniors?

My advice to rising seniors is to stay open to new experiences and not be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Senior year goes by fast, so take every opportunity to connect with your classmates, try something new, and enjoy the college search process!

What are you excited for after Bennett?

I’m looking forward to meeting new people, exploring new environments, and continuing to challenge myself academically and personally! I can’t wait to dive deeper into my passions and discover new ones along the way.
