Senior Spotlight: Avery
Why did you choose/decide to go to Bennett Day School?
I chose Bennett because it was the best fit for who I am. The project-based style of learning was similar to how I had been homeschooled, and it was a perfect environment for me to thrive.
What are your plans after you graduate?
As an Aspire grant recipient, HEAR Scholar, member of the National Society of High School Scholars, and new member of the CHANCE STEM Academy Cohort, I’m excited to begin my studies as a mechanical engineer this summer at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), while continuing my water safety advocacy work and special needs swim instruction on weekends.
What’s your favorite project-based learning (PBL) memory?
My favorite PBL project has to be the Accessibility Business Pitches. We spent the trimester learning about disabled populations and how we could improve their communities. For my demo night project, I fused my love of gaming with my love of engineering to create a working prototype of an accessible video game controller for people with physical disabilities and co-coded an accompanying game. It was my most creative project, and I had so much fun going through the engineering process.
What advice would you give rising seniors?
Be optimistic. There are so many doors in life that get shut in our faces. But don’t dwell on that disappointment, because those doors shut so you can find your door, the door that will lead you to your next chapter in life.
What are you excited for after Bennett?
I’m definitely excited to embark on a new journey in college. I’m excited for the new experiences in and out of the classroom, the hands-on engineering classes, studying abroad, and hopefully meeting new friends, expanding my community, and having fun.
