Senior Kindergarten – 7th Grade
Throughout the Lower School, children at Bennett Day will attend school in a safe environment and within an academically challenging, innovative, and creative learning space. Our theme-based curriculum will encourage students to engage deeply and with intention into meaningful inquiry into culture, language, mathematics, science and engineering, and literature. Each year, Bennett Day will adopt a school-wide theme, such as Communities, that will drive the curriculum over the course of the school year. Grade level teams will work together to develop the academic and curricular map, incorporating the departmental classes and working closely with the TinkerLab Master teacher. Our teachers will direct students toward important academic and intellectual milestones that include mastery as well as foster exciting curiosity and innovation.
The Lower School schedule is designed around the understood need for the necessary space and time to conduct rich study. Similar to our Early Childhood program, the Lower School at Bennett Day School is built around the idea of a responsive curriculum. As nurturers of curiosity and interests, our master and apprentice teachers use their thorough observations about students to create the projects that will guide the year. Our inquiry-based program allows for the ideas and wonderings of each student and all students to influence and shape the curriculum.
Departmental classes in the Lower School will include Spanish, Science, Visual Arts, TinkerLab, Music and Movement, and Physical Education. We will offer the AfterCare program for Lower School students. Additionally, we will offer after school programs to meet the diverse and varied extracurricular interests of our students and families.
At Bennett Day, we know Lower School students have rich and potent emotional lives. They are learning to make friends and maintain those relationships. They are exploring the world and becoming more fully aware of their place and impact on it. To do these extraordinary things, they need time and support, space, and independence. They flourish in work that provides just the right balance of encouragement, security, and challenge. We will provide that balance, making Bennett Day Lower School the ideal place to learn, explore, build, and dream.
