Susan Custer

Ms. Custer brings over 20 years of experience in Chicago’s independent schools, where she has served in a variety of roles, including classroom teacher (with specialties like art and woodshop for preschoolers), after-school and summer camp program developer, and, most recently, Assistant Director in the Pre-Nursery program at the British International School of Chicago. She holds a degree in Psychology and Child Development, and her educational philosophy is deeply rooted in the Reggio Emilia approach and the power of authentic, hands-on, student-led investigation. Most of the time, you’ll find Ms. Custer on the floor learning alongside the children or joyfully engaged in a story or song.
Originally from Texas, Ms. Custer now lives in Chicago with her animal-loving teenager and a lively household full of rescue and foster animals—from dogs to doves. One particularly special rescue is a Yorkie with a spinal injury who zips around in his doggie wheelchair like a maniac. Just ask Ms. Custer about his Instagram!
